Grants for Women

women receiving college grant for financial aid

Like a scholarship, a grant is a form of gift aid. That means that you don’t have to repay it at the end of your studies.

Grants are often distributed to those in financial need rather than based on merit. If you are having a hard time paying for school, grant money can provide welcome relief.

Where to Find Grants for Women

You may be able to obtain grants from:

  • Government. The federal government is one of the primary sources of grant money. To find out how much you qualify for in federal grants, you’ll need to fill out and submit the FAFSA. Your state may have grant programs for which you qualify as well.
  • Schools. In the interest of improving access to higher education, many universities have grant programs for low-income students. As with government grants, your qualification for these grants may be determined by the information on your FAFSA.
  • Private Foundations. Individual organizations may offer grants to deserving students who can demonstrate financial need. Some of these grants may be available specifically for female scholars.
  • Businesses. Because companies benefit when employees gain further education, your employer may assume some or all of your college tuition costs.

By compiling money-saving grants from multiple sources, you may be able to significantly reduce the financial burden of your college education.

Graduate Fellowships for Women

graduate fellowships for women

Similar to scholarships, fellowships are educational gift money that is granted to students based on merit.

Typically, you can expect to gain work experience as well as financial help from programs like these. Fellowships may cover more than just tuition such as research projects, travels or other scholarly activities.

Where to Find Graduate Fellowships for Women

You can get assistance in finding graduate fellowships through:

  • Your university. A university’s financial aid office is a good starting point when you’re searching for fellowship opportunities for women.
  • Professional Organizations. You can also directly contact professional organizations in your field to inquire whether they offer any fellowships.
  • Your Network. If you know any current or recent fellows, you can ask them for insight about how to procure fellowships.

This type of educational funding is most frequently available at the graduate level.

How to Pay for College

5 Ways to Pay For College

Financial aid comes in multiple forms:

  1. Loans. You can borrow money to pay for school. You’ll need to pay it back with interest after graduation. Loans may come from government programs or private sources.
  2. Grants. If you are identified as having financial need, you may receive government or private funding that you don’t have to pay back.
  3. Scholarships. Free education money that you receive based on your merit is typically known as a scholarship. You may earn scholarships for your academic prowess, athletic talent, personal achievements, community service, field of study or distinctive characteristics.
  4. Work-Study. The Federal Work-Study program matches you with a part-time job at your school or off campus. Your earnings can help you pay for school.
  5. Graduate Fellowships. When you get matched with a fellowship program, you’ll gain experience in your field and receive funds to help with tuition, research and other components of your graduate education.

Mixing several different types of aid can help you afford your college education.

What Are Scholarships?

A college scholarship is like a gift of money. It’s a form of financial aid that you won’t be obligated to pay back at the end of your time in school.

Female college students

Scholarships are similar to grants, but there are differences:

  • Grants are usually given out based on your financial need.
  • Scholarships are typically based on your merit or your qualifications. For example, you might receive scholarships because of your grades or your interests.

In some cases, you can qualify for both grants and scholarships.

Where to Find Scholarships

woman searching for scholarships on laptop

You may be able to find scholarship opportunities though the following resources:

  • Community Clubs. Looking around your town is a great way to begin your scholarship search. There is often lower demand for local scholarships than national ones, and several small scholarships can really add up. Check with service clubs, religious groups and local businesses.
  • School Resources. Universities often have multiple scholarships that they hand out to incoming or current students. The financial aid office may be able to provide information about school-wide or department-specific scholarship opportunities. In addition, if you’re going straight from high school to college, you may be able to get scholarships from groups within your high school.
  • Women’s Groups. Pro-female groups love to see women succeed in college, so they distribute money to encourage their educational pursuits. In particular, you may have good luck finding scholarships from female groups that are specific to your industry or field of study.
  • Your Employer. If you’re going back to school as an adult, you may be able to receive a scholarship from your company. Those still in high school may be able to get a scholarship from a parent’s employer.
  • Local or National Foundations. Some organizations are dedicated primarily to giving away money. Their gifts may be in honor of a memorable person, or they might be focused on helping people who are facing hardships get ahead.

There are more organizations with education money to give away than you might think!

Common Scholarship Requirements

scholarship requirements for female students

The first step to securing a scholarship is to go through the application process. While each scholarship committee sets its own application requirements, the following components are fairly standard:

1. Personal Statement

Written essays provide opportunities for scholarship committees to get to know you, your ambitions and your strengths. You may be asked to write about specific topics, such as a person who inspires you or where you see yourself 10 years from now.

2. Your Transcripts

Transcripts from your previous high school or college programs show what sort of grades you earned and whether you graduated.

3. Letters of Reference

Recommendation letters from personal, professional or academic references help committees learn whether you are a worthy candidate for their financial assistance.

For a complete application that a scholarship committee will take seriously, it’s important to gather all of the requested materials. In some cases, this may also include submitting SAT or GRE exam scores; however, there are a growing number of graduate programs that don’t require GRE scores.

8 Tips on Applying for Scholarships

Woman completing scholarship application

Scholarships are undeniably helpful, but earning them isn’t always easy. The following tips can help you improve your chances of landing these financial gifts.

1. Do Your Research

The sooner you start looking for scholarships, the more options you will have. If possible, begin searching for scholarship opportunities a few years before you plan to start school.

Once it’s time to start your college-enrollment process, you’ll know exactly which scholarships you want to apply for.

2. Consider Your Community

When looking for scholarships, start close to home. Because the applicant pool for local scholarships is smaller, you may have a better opportunity for landing an award.

Of course, it’s not a bad idea to submit applications for a few national scholarships as well.

3. Apply for Financial Aid

In most cases, scholarships won’t cover your full tuition costs, so you’ll probably need other forms of financial assistance too.

Not only will filling out the FAFSA show what government assistance you qualify for, but it may also be a requirement for some need-based scholarships.

4. Plan Ahead

If you wait until the night before the deadline to gather your scholarship materials, you may end up making silly mistakes on your application or leaving out important documents.

You can alleviate this stress by starting the process early.

5. Complete Each Application Individually

A scholarship essay shouldn’t sound like a form letter. Although it will take more time, writing a fresh personal statement for each application is the way to go. Decision committees appreciate essays that are tailored specifically to their unique scholarships.

6. Use Your Computer

When it comes to scholarship applications, handwritten is not better. Typed essays and letters of recommendation are easier to read and more professional.

If possible, fill out the application form digitally as well.

7. Mark Your Calendar

If you want your request for a scholarship to be considered, timely submission is essential. Turning in an application late may convey the impression that you aren’t serious about the scholarship or your college career.

January, February and March are some of the most common months for materials to be due.

8. Double-check Your Applications

Before sealing the envelope or clicking the “submit” button, take a few minutes to review your application one last time.

Be sure that you have included all of the required components, signed your name where necessary, and looked through your responses for typos or other mistakes.

7 Common Scholarship Pitfalls

Woman reading application for financial aid

Small application slip-ups can cost you big time. When you’re pursuing college scholarships, be sure to steer clear of the following mistakes.

1. Giving the Wrong Impression

Your online presence can say a lot about who you are. Scholarship committees may check out your social media profiles when considering you for their awards.

Before you start filling out applications, consider cleaning up your accounts to remove anything that might be seen as unacceptable for a scholarship recipient.

While you’re at it, make sure that you have a professional-sounding email address at which scholarship organizations can contact you.

female students texting

2. Applying for Too Many or Too Few Scholarships

Wearing yourself out with one application after another may not do you much good, especially if you don’t really meet the requirements for those scholarships.

Of course, you shouldn’t rest all of your hopes on just one or two applications either. Rather, try to find a middle ground by putting your best effort into a variety of scholarships that are the best match for you.

3. Treating References as an Afterthought

The best letters of recommendation:

  • Come from people who know you well in a professional or academic context
  • Articulate specific reasons why you would be a worthy recipient
  • Are written by people who care about your success

What others say about you often carries a great deal of weight in the selection process, so you need to choose your references carefully.

scholarship essays

4. Mass Printing Your Essay

In the same way that you want your references to provide personalized letters of recommendation, scholarship committees want to see that you gave their applications individual attention. You can’t type up one essay and submit it for every scholarship.

Instead, you should draft a new essay each time. If you do choose to reuse an essay now and then, its important to take the time to add new information that specifically addresses your current application.

5. Relying Too Heavily on Someone Else

You may have friends or family members who are skilled writers or detail-oriented people. They can be great resources during the application process, but you shouldn’t let them do all the work for you.

Scholarship committees want to know details about you, and you’re the best one to provide that information. No one else can talk about your goals, your experiences and your opinions quite as you can.

6. Paying to Apply

Reputable scholarships don’t charge application fees.

If an opportunity requires you to send in a payment with your forms, then it’s probably not an actual scholarship. Even if the instructions guarantee that you’ll receive money for school in return, you shouldn’t do it.

Scams, not scholarships, charge money upfront.

7. Submitting Your Applications at the Last Minute

A mad rush to complete your applications may lead to mistakes. It’s much better to give yourself a buffer of time so that you can carefully double-check your work before submission.

Besides, turning in your materials early may convey a sense of ambition to the decision committee. Conversely, sending your items off at the very last minute could hurt your chances of winning the award.

Challenges Faced By Female Students

Challenges for women students

Last year, the average four-year undergraduate school charged $26,120 for tuition, housing and other fees. However, the average woman received only $17,950 in aid. This assistance came in the form of grants and loans from both federal and non-federal sources.

In other words, you may face a gap of over $8,000 between the cost of school and your financial aid package each year.

Although that thought may be overwhelming, take heart. Scholarships for women can help you afford the cost of a college education. Female enrollment in college classes is a great thing, but it comes at a cost. University tuition is expensive, and taking out loans can leave women with significant debt after graduation.

student talking

As of this year, U.S. women collectively owe approximately $929 billion in student debt. That’s somewhere around two-thirds of the country’s total student debt.

Right out of school, women’s earnings may not provide much in the way of disposable income. Without money for extras beyond food and housing, quickly repaying school loans can be a challenge. Four years post-graduation, the average woman still carries nearly 70 percent of her student debt.

Qualifying for scholarships can help reduce your overall financial responsibility during your college years.

As a result, you may need to take out fewer loans — or possibly no loans at all!
