But your classroom can be wherever you choose it to be by taking an accelerated online class or a self-paced class.
Accelerated online classes are like a detailed guide to a road trip. You get a set starting date, regular stops (or assignments), check-in points and a date when you must arrive (be done your class). But how it is different from a normal road trip/class is that you get to go twice as fast.
Self-paced classes are like being given a map and a destination. But you get to decide how you get there and how fast you go. You are in charge of stops, starts and how many classes you take.
Option 1: Accelerated Online Political Science Classes
POP QUIZ: Which scenario would you prefer?
- Attend a traditional class in a classroom with 30 other students. Sit in a hard chair for 3 hours a week for 16 weeks. In the end you earn 3 credits towards your degree.
- Enroll in an online class. Complete your classwork around your regular schedule. Sit in your favorite chair. Be done in 8 weeks. Still earn 3 credits towards your degree
- Complete 2 classes in 16 weeks and end up with 6 credits towards your degree.
- Both a) and b)
Please tell me you chose d) or at least b). It should be a no brainer! Online classes give you all the same instruction, assignments, grading and transcript as a classroom. But they are faster, more convenient and easier to work around your schedule.
Option 2: Self-Paced Online Political Science Classes

3 Ways to Accelerate Your Political Science Degree Even More
Did you skip ahead to this section? Because you are a go getter and you want the secrets to finishing your degree as fast as possible. Well played. You will not be disappointed. 4 years to complete a political science degree is too long. These 3 tips can power you through 120 credits in just 18 months.
There is no reason to take 4 full years when you can be done much quicker.
1. Test out of college classes (up to 1 year)
The first thing you need to do is to forget the idea that you must take classes to earn credits. That’s not necessary. Classes take too much time! A better approach is to max out the number of credits you can earn through Credit by Exam.
Most colleges will give you up to 30 credits towards your degree if you can pass the exam, even without taking the class. Through a program like College Level Examination Program you can register online for an exam, grab the study guide, then you go to an exam center and in 90 minutes you complete 100 (often multiple choice) questions.
If you get 50% of those questions right, you can walk out with 3 credits. That’s right 90 minutes for 3 credits instead of 3 hours a week for 16 weeks.
2. Get college credit for your life and work experience
If you are pursuing your college degree after having worked or traveled for a few years after high school, you could use that to your advantage. Many online universities and colleges have programs set up that will award you credit for your life and work experience.
Search your school’s website for either “Credit for Prior Learning” or “Recognition of Prior Learning”. You will find that there is a specific policy set up by your school that will give you up to 15 credits for your life experience.
Typically, you put together a portfolio that details your job training, military experience, credentials and experiences. You pay a fee for this and once your portfolio is approved you could be happily looking at a whole semester of credit.
3. Stay continuously enrolled with the max course load
Now you know how to get credit without going to class. But eventually you will have to start your class work. You can NOT earn a complete degree without completing some class work. But you do not have to work at a typical pace.
Even with online classes most students will register for only 15 credits each semester. 15 in the fall, 15 in the winter and then take the summer off. Why would you want to do that with online classes? You can still do your classwork while going to the beach, taking holidays and soaking in the rays.
You can also take more credits because you aren’t wasting time commuting to your classes. Most schools will let you maximize your course load at 18 credits per semester AND let you take a full course load over the summer too.
3 semesters in 12 months can earn you 54 credits.
Transferring Your Existing College Credits
If you got it, use it. Especially if the “it” you have is pre-existing college credit. Any credit that you have earned will save you time and money now. Whether you have credit from a previous degree you started, AP classes in high school or an evening class. You already put in the effort to earn that credit so do not waste it.
Valuable credit will be:
- From an accredited college
- From a class that you earned a grade of at least a C
- Able to fit into your political science degree
But political science degrees can find a spot for any class. Even if it does not meet your degree requirements, the credit you have earned can fill a spot on your electives list.
Lower Tuition Costs
Classes are expensive. One 3 credit political science class at Georgetown University will cost you $1620. Consider that you will need 40 classes to finish your degree and you are looking at $64,800. Tuition is the most expensive part of your degree.
The only way to make your tuition cheaper is to take fewer classes while still earning credit. Remember that a 3 credit exam through the College Level Examination Program will only cost you $85. Same credit but saves you $1535.

Keep yourself safe by making sure that the school you choose is accredited. This means that your college or university has been reviewed by an accrediting board and has earned the right to grant you a degree. Accreditation can be either regional or national.
