Accelerated Project Management Degree Programs Online – Accelerated Classes vs. Self-Paced Classes

The best kept secret to completing your degree faster is the type of classes that you take. Traditional in-person classes are old school. And incredibly slow and time consuming when you compare them to these 2 speedy options.

  • Accelerated Online Classes
  • Self Paced Classes

Don’t be a turtle. Good project managers know how to get the job done in the quickest way. Shortcuts are allowed when they get you good results in half the time.

Accelerated online classes will do that. Instead of attending a typical university class that will take 16 weeks to complete, you can choose to fast track your classes. And complete them at home. You still have a class schedule that you need to stick with, a list of assignments to complete and a scheduled end date.

Or if you would prefer to skip schedules altogether and work at your own pace, try self-paced classes. There is no limit to the classes you can take with this approach, when you start or what classes you complete.

Option 1: Accelerated Online Project Management Classes

Imagine you are assigned your first project to manage. An experienced colleague pulls you aside and says you could complete the project twice as fast as expected. 100% legit and the quality would be just as good. You would listen up, right?

That is what an accelerated online class offers you. A traditional class will take you 16 weeks to complete. An accelerated class allows you to finish the entire class in 6-8 weeks. Yes, twice as fast. You get the same education and knowledge but faster. To make the best use of this strategy you would take another class right after the first one and end up with 2 classes completed in the typical time 1 class would take.

Option 2: Self-Paced Online Project Management Classes

Sometimes even an accelerated speed is still too slow for you. If you are a go-getter and always working faster than the rest of the team, you should think about self-paced classes.

You are the only one who determines how fast you can complete your classes. Usually how this works is that you pay a one-time fee of $2300 and are given a time of 12-16 weeks. But those are the only perimeters.

You are given access to all the class materials you will need and you can complete the work as fast as you want. Some students have finished 10 or more classes in one self-paced semester. Incredible!

Types of Accelerated Project Management Degree Programs

Not all project manager jobs will require you to have a project management degree. But most will want you to have experience in project management AND a degree. These degrees can help you gain both:

These degrees can give you the education you need to be able to set goals, create schedules, establish budgets and delegate and monitor your team members.

3 Ways to Accelerate Your Project Management Degree Even More

Your first project is to get your degree. But you can prove your skill by getting your degree done twice as fast as the average 4 years while saving at least $15,000.

1. Test out of college classes (up to 1 year)

Innovation is the key to successful projects. This tip is definitely innovative. Classes are not the only way to earn college credit.

If you already know the material or can learn it quickly, why bother wasting 16 weeks completing a class? Most colleges and universities have programs set up to recognize your existing knowledge. Take advantage of this.

One of the best known and reputable ways to test out of college classes is to register with the College Level Examination Program. Through this program, you can sign up online to take the exam for many of your elective or preliminary classes.

One exam costs you $85 and typically consists of 100 multiple choice questions. You have 90 minutes to complete the exam and can walk out with 3 credits.

The only qualifier is that you must get at least 50% on the exam. But you can get a study guide that gives you the information you need to know beforehand. You can earn up to 30 credits with this super duper easy and fast method.

2. Get college credit for your life and work experience

If you already have work experience you need to jump on to this idea. You can get credit for what you have been doing at work. Typically, universities have a Credit for Prior Learning program set up. You can earn a full semester of credits, that’s 15 credits, by submitting a portfolio.

Each university has a different process, but the common pattern is you:

– consult with your advisor and choose the classes that you have already met the course objectives

–  compile documents that show your training and references

– show that you have mastered the learning outcomes

– pay your portfolio fee and walk away with a semester of credit

Genius, right?

3. Stay continuously enrolled with max course load

Now you have all the easy methods for getting credit done first. The last way to get your degree completed quickly is to work hard. Really hard.

You can almost double the number of credits you earn in a year by maxing out the number of classes you enroll in. A usual semester will earn you 15 credits, but you can take 18 credits each fall and winter semester. As well as 18 credits over the summer months. That is 54 credits in 12 months versus 30 credits in 12 months.

If you have also tested out of 30 credits using the College Level Examination Program and 15 credits with Credit for Prior Learning, you can have all 120 credits within 18 months.

Transferring Your Existing College Credits

The other secret to being done fast is to not waste any college credit that you previously earned. College credit whether you earned it at a community college, in an AP class in high school or 10 years ago can usually be applied to the degree you are pursuing right now.

The 3 criteria to consider are:

  • The college credit was earned from an accredited school
  • Your final mark was a C or higher
  • There is a spot for that class in your new degree

Your project management class will have space that you fill in with electives. A previous class can easily be used to fit one of those elective spots and save you from completing another class.

Lower Tuition Costs

You know that a bachelor’s degree is necessary to be considered for most management roles. Especially the ones that pay the big six figure salaries.

But you are probably afraid that you are going to have to spend six figures on tuition before you even get started. That is a valid concern and one that can hold you back from starting.

Tuition is crazy expensive! One year at Southern New Hampshire University can cost you $30,756 in tuition alone. You do the math for what 4 years would cost!

Online classes are significantly cheaper at only $960 per 3 credit class. But if you need 120 credits you are looking at a bill of only $38,400. The best way to chop your tuition prices is to take fewer classes. You do this by earning as many credits by exam and credits for prior learning as you can.

Each class you can test out of will save you at least $875, that adds up quickly!

The choice seems obvious: Spend more time and money earning credits OR save 2.5 years and at least $15,000.

Project Management Degree Accreditation

The tips you learned are all about ways to save you time and money. But the one thing you would never do is to get your degree from a non-accredited institute. That will waste your time and money. You can’t get a job with a fake degree.

If you attend a regional college, they will typically be accredited regionally and that is good enough. For a higher level of recognized accreditation you could look at whether your school has been accredited by:

Anyone of those names listed as accrediting your school means that your degree is legitimate.

Here’s your first project: get your degree in project management. You can learn all the tips and tricks for spending less money and getting your degree faster but unless you start your degree, this knowledge is wasted.
