Sorry, won’t happen. In fact you won’t even be a “Doctor” or “Psychologist”. A bachelor degree does start you on the path to psychologist.
Dr. Phil has a Doctoral degree in clinical psychology from the University of North Texas. If you want to be Dr Phil, now you know how.
But a bachelor degree in psychology has its own list of careers available to you. From marketing, sales, advertising, rehabilitation, real estate, social work, child care and parole and career counselling.
There is no shortage of jobs the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics reports that opportunities in psychology will continue to grow by 19% in the next 7 years.
Most of your psych classmates will go on to complete graduate studies in psychology, up to 40%. Graduate studies are where the money and the prestigious jobs are. Just saying.

Accelerated Psychology Degree Programs Offer Year-Round Admissions
So let’s get started. You want to start now. Don’t wait to start your degree.
See what I did there? I was controlling your mind. But you don’t need me to do that.
You are probably psyched to start right away.
So let’s do it!
Many universities throughout North America will offer start dates each month.
There is no reason for you to wait until the “right time”. You can make the right time today and be finishing up your class in Intro to Psychology before your next Thanksgiving family dinner.
Maybe you can even finish a class in Abnormal Psychology or Family Dynamics too. That will make you really popular around the turkey!
Accelerated Psychology Degree Programs Online – Accelerated Classes vs. Self-Paced Classes
There are a myriad of psychology theories out there from Freud to Carl Jung to well Dr Phil. Each has different perspectives on the human mind and how and why it functions the way it does.
There is also a myriad of ways to complete your classes. 2 of the biggies that you will find in online classes are accelerated online classes or self-paced classes.
Accelerated classes are a class set with a particular start date and due dates. But faster than average. Self-paced classes are completed at your pace. So you can complete many classes in one semester with your super mind powers.
Option 1: Accelerated Online Psychology Classes
Typically you plunk into a Intro to Psychology class and putter through it for 16 weeks. Long enough to survive No Shave November and at least 2 college relationships.
But you’re a psych major, you’re going to go faster. Not through relationships necessarily but through your classes.
An accelerated online class is completed in 6-8 weeks. But you still get all the same material from your professors, the same assignments and the same class on your transcript.
You just get to finish quicker. And you, being so clever, will jump right up and start another class right away. So while your peers have only completed 1 class, you have completed 2.
Option 2: Self-Paced Online Psychology Classes
But what if deadlines, due dates and set schedules makes you squirrely? Then go for self-paced. You put on your thinking cap and you go like gangbusters for a 12 week semester, knocking off class after class.
A school like Capella University will allow you to register for a 12 week semester for a flat fee of $2300. During that 12 week time frame you can do as. Many. Courses. As. You. Like.
Really. There is no limit. Does that sound like a challenge you would be up to?
In 12 weeks and for $2300 you could complete all your electives in composition, sciences, math, social science and humanities.
It would be intense but doable.
Types of Accelerated Psychology Degree Programs
Psychology degrees, like people, have many different areas to focus on. Which is good. When you get a degree in psychology to help people, you are at your best when you have a specific niche to focus on.
Some of the concentrations available in psychology are:
- Bachelor’s in Psychology
- Bachelor’s in Psychology – Crisis Counseling
- Bachelor’s in Psychology – Clinical Counseling
- Bachelor’s in Psychology – Addiction & Recovery
- Bachelor’s in Psychology – Criminal Psychology
- Bachelor’s in Psychology – Life Coaching
- Bachelor’s in Psychology – Military Resilience
From addictions to crisis there are people who need your help and your concentration will prepare you to help that specific group of people.
Even within each concentration are branches that you might climb. There are specializations in research, theories and treatments. Once you earn your bachelor’s in psychology, you can look into getting a master’s or even online doctor of psychology (Psy.D.).
3 Ways to Accelerate Your Psychology Degree Even More
Theories and ideas in psychology are only useful when they are matched with action. You know you want to get your accelerated degree in psychology. Now you need to know how.
You are in the right place. These 3 options can cut years off the time you will put into your psychology degree. Preparing you to help people quicker.
1. Test out of college classes (up to 1 year)
This is not a gimmick. You don’t have to go to class to get credit. Sounds crazy, but it is really a thing.
Instead of registering to take Human Growth and Development, you just take the exam. Because you have always been interested in psychology, so you know quite a bit already.
Don’t waste your time in class, re-learning what you already learned.
By registering with the College Level Examination Program you can earn up to 30 credits by exam. You don’t have to already know the material.
You can register online for any exam you need, purchase the study guide and power through it. Then you head off and take the exam. As long as you get 50% then you are automatically assigned credit for the course.
Without sitting in class for 1 second.
2. Get college credit for your life and work experience
Have you completed any workplace certificates or training? Those can count for credit. Again, credit for classes you don’t have to go to!
Usually referred to a Credit for Prior Learning, check with your university how their process works. Most universities have a program set up to GIVE you credit for your life and work experience.
Liberty University offers credit if you have experience in (just some ideas, there’s more):
- Border Patrol
- Early Childhood Education
- Human Resources
You could be eligible to submit a portfolio with your training, experiences and credentials to your university and earn up to 15 credits for what you have already done. That’s winning!
3. Stay continuously enrolled with max courseload
Now you know how to get credit without attending class. But you will have to eventually complete some classes. The magic solution for making your classes finish quicker is…..work hard. All. The. Time.
No jokes. If you follow a typical university student schedule and take 30 credits each year you will take 4-5 years to finish your degree.
But it doesn’t have to take that long.
Most universities will allow you to take up to 18 credit hours each semester. Including summer. 3 semesters in a year will earn you 54 credits.
Knocking your degree time down to less than 3 years.
If you also tested out of 30 credits, you knocked off another year. You are down to 2 years.
And you did submit a portfolio for 15 credits, yes? Now you are done in 18 months.
Mind blown? I thought so.
Transferring Your Existing College Credits
Time to dust off your old college transcripts from when you took a few classes but didn’t complete a degree. Don’t forget those credits, they can still count.
Pre-existing college credits are college classes that you have already taken that can still be used to your degree requirements.
First you should check that:
- Your college was accredited
- You earned at least a C in the class
- The class can be applied to your new degree
You are still in luck if you just met the first 2 requirements. That class you took in college level Algebra might not count as a Psychology class BUT it does count as an elective. Use it.
Lower Tuition Costs
School is going to cost you a lot. That shouldn’t surprise you. Tuition is pricey.
Although you can try winning scholarships, there are only a limited number available. So you might not get one.
A psychology degree will take 120-180 credit hours.
If you go to Boston University you are looking at (brace yourself) $203,920. Same degree at the New York University would be $100,928. Six figures is a lot!
Instead of banking on a scholarship, which might not pan out, you can just take fewer classes.
Remember credit for exams? You can take a 3 credit exam through the College Level Examination Program for $80.
That’s even cheaper than tuition for a Texas resident at the University of North Texas. Where Dr Phil went. A 3 credit class would cost $150.
You can do better than that because you know about Credit for Prior Learning too. Compare these numbers.
It’s not a secret but so many people don’t know about ways that ANYBODY can lower their tuition costs. There is no limit on who can do this.
So tell your friends. It could make you even more popular. Because everybody likes to save money.
Psychology Degree Accreditation
Whether your plan is to pursue graduate studies or to stop once you are done your bachelor’s degree, you need to make sure that your college is accredited.
Accreditation is an official designation that gives your school (and degree) credibility. Without accreditation you might as well be printing a degree off your computer from “Happy Go Lucky School of Psychology”.
You want to be legit. A legitimate degree is necessary to get into grad school and also to get a job in your field.
Some of the biggest psychology accreditors are:
- APA Commission on Accreditation
- Council for Accreditation of Counseling and Related Educational Programs
- Council for Higher Education Accreditation (CHEA)
- Distance Education Accrediting Commission (DEAC)
- American Association of Marriage and Family Therapy (AAMFT)
If the school you choose to attend is regionally accredited than you can relax. Your degree will count. Big name accreditation just takes it an extra step.
Now you are in the know. A psychology degree is attainable and affordable.
Are you going to go for it?
You have the possibility of working in a field that you have dreamed of for years. A field that is experiencing an increased demand for professionals trained in psychology. There are a raising number of jobs in
- social service agencies

- private companies
Take a look around you. There is a strong need for people who can help people.
It doesn’t have to take you 4 years and $100,000. You have the potential to be out there making a difference in 18 months.
Be your own first client. Ask yourself: What is holding you back from going ahead with accomplishing your dream?
